Tutorial: Alien Blender to Zbrush

How to create an Alien figure with “Blender” and “Zbrush”.

Hello, today I’m going to show you how to export a 3d model from “Blender” and import it for finer editing with “Zbrush.”

We are going to make an alien.

First open “Blender.” Leave the default cube as we are going to be using it.

Go into edit mode by pushing ‘Tab.’ Then push ‘W’ then push ‘Subdivide Smooth.’ This will add more vertices to the cube while smoothing it.

Still in edit mode push ‘A’ to deselect all vertices. Then change the selection mode to ‘Faces’. This is shown in the diagram below. Select the top half of the object.

While the top half of the object is selected push ‘G’ this will let you move the top half “Blender” will automatically adjust the connecting sides. After pushing ‘G’ push the letter ‘Y’ then the number ‘2.’ This will move the top half 5 units up.

The base model for our alien is complete. Now we need to export of model. Go file, export and export the file as a wavefont.obj file. Leave the export settings as default. You can now close “Blender.”

Open ‘Zbrush’. The default script should run showing Zbrush’s main interface.  Click on ‘Import .obj file’ and browse to where you exported your model with blender. When you have imported it ‘Zbrush’ should be showing the picture below. You can click on the blank space to rotate around the object.

Where going to start by subdividing the object. This will dramatically increase the number of faces which will increase the resolution of the object. Push ‘Control’ + ’D.’

Notice How the Detail has been increased significantly. Push ‘Control’ + ’D.’ six more times.

Notice how much detail there is in the object now.

Next we are going to be adding legs to our alien. Change the bush type to ‘Snake hook’ as shown in the picture below.

Now Click and Drag to draw a leg looking like the picture below. It does not have to be perfect but if you do make a mistake you can push ‘Control’ +  ‘Z’ to undo the mistake.

Draw legs completely around the object. There should be around 8 legs.

Notice there is a bulge at the bottom of the object. We can get rid of this by ‘InFlat’ brush. This brush would normally make a bulge on a object and we want it to get rid of the bulge. To do this we need to right click anywhere and change ‘Zadd’ option to ‘Zsub.’ This will subtract a bulge. Simply click on you bulge to remove it.

Now we are up to adding features to the alien. I am going to add a single eye. You can add much more if you want to. To add an eye change to the Eye1 brush and draw an eye on the alien. It should look something like mine below.

To get the object back to blender click export. It will export the image as a wavefront.obj file again. So there is no need to convert it to import it with “Blender.”

Open “Blender” once again and go File, Import, and click on the Wavefront.obj file. Select where you exported the wavefront.obj file from Zbrush and click import. Leave the import settings at default once again. You should now have a successful model for use in blender that has been created in Zbrush.
