Folders are overflowing with thousands of files inside of it plus some thousands of missing files. Can the tag system fix this?

How information will be saved and processed in the future is still a mystery. We can, just by looking at evolution in websites and in our own behavior, that the future is very close to save information not in the form of files, but in the form of keywords. Right now, if you want to save information online or offline, you save it inside folders. When you want to access it again, you open the folder and it’s all there. This system worked well in the past when there was much less information than there is right now. Today billions of new unique webpages are created everyday, this number will never cease to increase because of the number of computers sold and new internet connections. Imagine what will happen when a company launches some satellites to give the entire world free internet via wireless standard. Take a look at your hard disk. If you are keeping everything in folders, you are having a bad time locating files, avoiding creating duplicated files, keeping a time line of those files, and worse of all you are having a sick time trying to find a particular file because you can only see the title and not the content.
This tag system is already in use by all blogs and sites, instead of putting data in categories or folders, they attach tags to the data and so you can find all relates data in the same tag. Is this system better than folders? In your desktop you can already do this but with great effort. Windows Vista has something called virtual folders which is nothing but the results of a particular search. If you save a search for MP3 files, every time you open that folder, you will see all your computer’s MP3 files in it. With the tag you could save your documents anywhere that he would still be in that folder. Gmail already uses this system too but needs a lot of work…
What are the disadvantages of this system? You would have either to type the tags all the time in a search box just like in a desktop search or you would have to have thousands of tags in your desktop which is not practical.

Informative and interesting article.
nice post a as usual.
Your are so correct, now lets see what the future holds
The idea of tags is just great! I don’t know if newbies will be able to use it without problems because I think tags are a bit more difficult to understand than directories are but for geeks tags will certainly be a great addition to (not instead of) directories.
