Spinning an Old Term

How the web industry is taking an old term and spinning into a new, ecologically friendly term.

In the recent rush of web hosting companies jumping onto the green bandwagon, along with brand new terms such as “100% green web hosting” and “eco-friendly web services”, commonly used terms and phraseology have been revamped to echo planet friendly attitudes.  One of the more current additions to this revamped list is “organic software”.

Exactly what is organic software? Mozilla Firefox has recently touted its browser as “100% organic software” and several other software companies are starting to jump in on the new wording. The phrase actually comes up even earlier than Mozilla’s announcement – GiantSpatula coined the new terminology for Mozilla late 2007. Organic software in this case is basically a concept that would sit easier with Firefox users rather than stating “free software”.  This sounds very much like an already existing phrase – open source software.

Open source software is programming that is developed, designed and distributed for free. It is software that allows its users to delve into the source code and add to this source code. Instead of mass produced software disks, open source software is simply an internet download away. All of these features describe Mozilla Firefox and other products now labeled as organic software.

Admittedly, saying “organic software” is much easier than “open source software you can download off the internet”. In the mad dash to comply with the public’s new lean toward cleaner and more ecologically friendly services, perhaps rewording older and possibly tired phrases could catch prospective customer’s eyes. It’s one of the perks the web has as a constant self-reinventing technology.

Kudos for a wonderfully researched and well wrote first article.

As a technology savvy child of the informational age, employed with just one of the many subjective forms; I predict rewording will occur, as it did with FireFox, to those outdated/overused technology descriptions. In fact, I know it will; and there are many companies following suit in this twenty-first century technological revolution. The appeal at current is the appeal of green technology awareness; with massive emphasis put on the single word “organic”. As companies reword their substance, the will go forth itching for more use; or more generated revenue.

I swear by FireFox, as you know, and I would be lost without this browser! As a single technology savvy user, out of the millions, it brought forth more respect for the company to know that they are “concerned” with the global appeal. This “100% organic software” brought more respect to software that I had the critical respect for to start with. I can assume that the respect carries forth to other users; and consumes the users concerned with environmental awareness and the impact technology makes.

I’m also a lover of Open Source software, simply because it allows for personalization and creative expression; it was one of the best ideas ever introduced in my opinion. With that, I believe the new spin offs on names will only go over with exceptional reviews.

Sorry so long winded, great article and a great deal of points I wanted to comment on; but you’re already aware that the journalist in Amanda has a hard time shutting up :) Best of luck on both your freelancing work and your membership here; if you ever need help let me know.
