Rss: The Really Simple Syndication System

Let me help you demystify RSS!

RSS is a great way to get live updating information from your favorite blogs and websites. It commonly translates to “Really Simple Syndication”, but I want to demystify what it truly is helpful for. RSS is usually a raw feed. This raw feed are recent posts by the website/blog in code you cannot read. This is essentially what RSS truly is. There are many many useful tools with RSS, but I am only going to name a few.
To read the raw feed, you need a feed reader. There are many readers out there. I would only use one. Google Reader. Google Reader is sleek, efficient, and can manage all of your blogs in one place. If you have IGoogle, then you can have RSS feeds updated there. I have a list of popular readers here

If you want a firefox RSS reader, look no further, because firefox already has one implemented! When you are at a page that has a feed, there is a button on the address bar that looks like three radio waves (which is the widely accepted RSS icon). Click on it. Make sure it is set to live bookmarks, and the feed will show on your bookmarks toolbar.
Now if you are a blog or website owner, RSS can be a tremendous advantage! People can subscribe and get the latest posts and news, automatically! It is like getting the newspaper delivered directly to them, except it is your site and information! Feedburner can get your RSS Feed up and running in no time. Just follow the instructions. Feedburner has stats that will show subscribers, and you can set up a subscribe button on your site.
RSS can be a great addition to your collection whether you are a site owner, or the site’s frequent reader.
