Quick Ways to Speed Up Your Computer

Tired of your computer being slow? Try these tips.

The main reasons that new, fast computers go slow is because they become cluttered.  Every time an action is made on a computer it has to be stored in the RAM of a computer, and when this RAM is nearly full or is cluttered it takes the computer forever to register the action.  Also your C: Drive can get overran with excess files and folders that can slow your computers performance drastically.  Here are a few quick ways to cut down on the amount of junk littered throughout your computer.

Defragmenting

Over time, files become fragmented, or broken up and spread apart.  Defragmenting your computer’s files will put them all back together and make them less scattered so they are more easily ran.

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Go to All Programs, accessories
  3. System tools, Disk defragment
  4. Then make sure the C: Drive is highlighted and click Defragment (This may take a while)

Disk Cleanup

Believe it or not, there are hundreds of files on your computer that get stored with use, that are nothing but extra weight on your computer.  Disk cleanup will find and delete these files freeing up space.

  1. As before, navigate your way to system tools
  2. Click Disk Cleanup

Compressing files

There are many files that are very large and by themselves can slow your computer down.  It’s not that they’re bad files they are just so large they weigh down your memory.  You can compress these files to make them smaller so they take up less space.

  1. Right-click the start button and go to explore
  2. By expanding or clicking on the folders on the left, find the files you want to compress (preferrably the larger ones)
  3. Right click the file/folder and go to properties
  4. Click the “advanced” button
  5. Then check the box beside “Compress contents to save disk space”
  6. Click OK

Removing useless programs

There are programs that you have downloaded that can be very large and you don’t ever use them.  Therefore they are just sitting there taking up space.  Throw those old programs out!

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Go to Control Panel, then Add/Remove programs
  3. Look for large programs that you use rarely, it will show how often the files are used on the right
  4. Then click remove on the files that should be removed.

Now these tips might not revolutionize your computer’s speed, but this will definitely help.  For the time spent doing all this you can help clean up your computer significantly.
