Follow the steps to fix the issue with the CD or DVD driving missing.This steps may also fix issues where there is problem with CD-DVD burning and also drive don’t detect the writing media.
1) Open device manager
- In XP, Right click ‘My computer’ – Manage – Device manager
In Vista, Right click ‘Computer’ – Manage – Device manager
- Check the entries in CD-ROM/DVD drives. If there is a Red Cross, then enable the device by right click and select the option ‘enable’. Or else right click on the entries and remove it. If you have 2 entries listed, remove both and restart the computer. Check if the issue is fixed
2) Check the upper filter and lower filter
- In Vista and XP, open the registry editor by typing “regedit” in Run windows.
- Navigate to the location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE – SYSTEM – CurrentControlSet – Control – Class – {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
- On the right side, look for any entry which says upper filter and lower filter. (Don’t worry, your computer might have either one of these entries or it may not have any of these entries at all) Remove the entry and restart the computer and check if the issue is fixed.
3) If step 1 and 2 don’t work, there is a possibility that the presence of CD-DVD burning software is creating the issues. Uninstall all software’s which is related to CD-DVD burning. Restart the computer every time after uninstalling software. This will help in finding which software created the issue.
4) Open disk management
- In XP, Right click ‘My computer’ – Manage – Disk management
In Vista, Right click ‘Computer’ – Manage – Disk management
- Check for the drive which says CD or DVD drive. Right click and change the drive letter.
5) If all the above steps failed, try this
(Note: Please this step at your own risk, maybe as a final attempt. Take a backup of the registry before making the changes. After doing this step, I have come across some scenarios where the computer will be slow after restart. This might be because the changes might have created a conflict with the security software which is guarding the registry. 90% slow computer issue gets fixed by uninstall and re-install the security software)
- Open registry again.
- Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, right click and open ‘Permissions’. Under ‘Group or User names’, remove if any ‘restricted’ is listed. Then give ‘full control and read’ permission to everyone user account. If there is no ‘everyone’ user account, create one using the ‘Add’ button.
Hope this helps in fixing the issue
