Photoshopping Trend in Magazine Pictures

Image editing software is widely used in advertising. Adobe Photoshop is one of the most frequently used software in the industry.

Adobe Photoshop is a photo editing software that is sometimes used to produce airbrushed images in magazines and other advertising media. Adobe Photoshop is not the only photo retouching software used for this purpose, but it is one of the most well known photo editors. The Adobe Photoshop software was developed by Adobe Systems. Photoshop is the current market leader among professional photo editing software.

Photoshopped pictures are altered in many ways, usually producing a picture that resembles the person photographed in real life. However, a photoshopped picture does not look exactly like the real person.

A W Magazine cover was the subject of a lot of discussion, when it was obvious that the picture of actress Demi Moore that was used for the cover was altered to make the already slim actress appear to have much slimmer hips. . Images are often modified to make already slim models look even slimmer.

Photoshop and similar photo editing programs and graphics software can be used to give the model in a picture higher cheekbones, change the arch of their eyebrows, change their body shape and more. In some magazines, when a product, for example mascara, is advertised, the magazines will go as far as to request that skilled artists copy individual lashes in the mascara ads, making the lashes of the model in the ad appear fuller than would be possible with just the product that is being advertised.

When Did The Trend of Using Photo Retouching Software Begin?

Adobe Photoshop began being used to refine, showcase and manipulate images around 1987. Graphic artists and photographers use it to bring what they see in their imagination to reality.

Photoshop is not just used by magazines. It’s used by engineers, doctors, video professionals, architects and many other professionals. Artists like LewSEthics can produce creative images with photo editing software.

Politicians in some countries, such as Britain have thought of banning airbrushed images. Some time ago, Liberal Democrats in the United Kingdom went into an uproar over an ad featuring the model Twiggy, which showed her with glowing, almost perfect skin. Pictures of her which were taken after the ad was done looked entirely different.

Some persons have suggested that airbrushed images carry a symbol. On the other hand some people say that since the majority of magazine pictures are airbrushed; those that aren’t should carry a symbol.

Lawmakers are worried that these kinds of ads may be putting additional pressure on young girls, further damaging their self esteem with fantasy images. Airbrushed images creep into the subconscious and present consumers of all ages with unrealistic standards which cannot be achieved.

You are right. It is now the craze all over.

10.12.27

Interesting topic. Photoshop is an amazing software. I guess many photos of models and celebrities have whitening done to make them look more perfect. Sometimes, it’s better to look at their plain look to find out the truth.

10.12.27

Though it’s been helpful and useful to artists…there are some that used it just to distort or modify and alter the true image of an individual just to look good or beautiful in from of a magazine or a paper.
it’s just for insecure individuals really :)

great share here my Friend..:)
Though I use the other Software..Corel :)

good information. Thanks a lot. I loved that squeezing money pic Sharifa

As Raj said, I too loved the picture of squeezing money from a sponge. Photoshop is now definitely a craze.

10.12.27

Superior article. I was just thinking, all my life my mom told me they do something called airbrush all the models. Did they do that? Did they ever show a model looking like herself. I was only 16 in 1987, so I don’t remember.

Hi Nz, Corel is great software.

10.12.27

Hi Raj,
Glad you liked it my friend.

10.12.27

Very good article. I am kind of sad that these images were not banned world-wide. They truly create an unachievable and misleading standards and idols thus ruining lives of milions of young girls (and sometimes boys too). These ads also often create a missleading image for the product we are about to buy. That leads to disappointment and waste of money (usually of hard working and honest people) … Such activities are immoral and should be illegal too as they are pure scams.

Of course, I see nothing wrong with retouching and changing photos for artistic and practical purposes (like inserting a planned building into photo of neighborhood to see whether it will really fit there …)

Glad you like it Anu.

10.12.27

If they show a model looking like himself or herself it’s probably an accident Pattiann.

10.12.27

Excellent piece. I am happy to see this article, because our young girls think that what they see, flawless models, are how they are suppose to look; they try and fail because no one is perfect. I wish they could read this one. I liked it.

Some people are naturally beautiful, but most of those famous beautiful people are very high maintenance, and it costs more to make them look that way than most of us earn in a year. Much of their high incomes goes to maintaining their looks.
So what if they want photoshopped pictures of themselves?
As long as it isn’t being used in court, what difference does it make?
People have always drawn “characatures” of famous people, highlighting their most identifying features, as in Marylin Monroes fabulous curves, or Pres. Jimmy Carter’s huge smile. President FD Roosevelt was always photographed in a way that hid his wheelchair.
Its just people being people. Just a little vanity, not a crime.
Kids that mope around because some TV personality is thinner than they are need to be handed some chores to do.

10.12.27

Excellent post Sharifa, and I wish my dish-washing sponge (5 in a packet) can be something like the pic here, then I will like to wash dishes, hahaha.

10.12.27

Another interesting article. Thank you Sharifa.

10.12.27

We should teach our girls not to depend on body beauty but beauty of the mind.

10.12.27

You have very good points up there. Nothing in the media is natural now.

10.12.27

You’re welcome Geny.

10.12.27

Thanks Awesome.

I should try to learn this software right away.

When truth is being manipulated, everything goes haywire in this world.Who would have thought that photoshop editing fun could develop psychological problems for people.

10.12.27

You’re welcome Leoforex.

10.12.27

Misleading ads are not doing the consumers any good. When people buy a product expecting it to do for them what it did for the people in the ad, they will be disappointed Michal.

Thanks Strategy.

Thanks Chipmunk.

10.12.27

Good technical aspects included here. Nice share.

10.12.27

It was only a couple of weeks ago I had a play on a free try for one of these software programs. It was great fun but it does make you realise that the images you see are not all they seem to be. No wonder we all feel ugly!

10.12.27

Interesting article on how false some of these images can be, surely it must come under false advertising.

10.12.27

nice post

10.12.27

This is really interesting. Photoshop has become popular. It is a great way to mislead people into thinking that people are perfect looking.

10.12.27

You can tell the difference when pictures are taken out of the studio.

10.12.27

Thank you Gaby.

It is important for stars to put their best out there-we have to do the same on the job. I think many of the kids are being influenced by what they see, because they don\’t know that it\’s not real.

It must be a special brand Star. ;-)

10.12.27

Lisa, if we were more concerned with beauty inside as well as outside we would have a much better world.

10.12.27

Hi John,
That’s why on some of the cereal boxes, and food ads they have in fine print that the actual product may not look exactly like what is displayed.
Some of the other industries have some catching up to do.

Photoshop is really a great tool. I love this application.

Women routinely put on makeup to looks better when stepping out. If your photo is to be shown around it also needs some makeup or a makeover. While the debate about the evils of airbrushing has been going on for years, photo retouching services have become commonplace and very affordable to everyone. My company – PhotoHand.com routinely retouches wedding and engagement photos, graduation shots, pregnancy and baby images, boudoir photos ans what not.

10.12.27

Thanks for the feedback Athena and Alex.
