OpenOffice Should Improve

Open Office bugs.

As a Linux user I use OpenOffice daily as my default office suite of choice and by far I use Writer more than anything else. One thing that stupefies me is the lack of support for common words, considering that I’m using version 3.1 which happens to be the latest version. As I was tying a browser, the word distro returned an error. Similarly the word blog returned an error as well. By default most Linux distros (yes I continue to use that word even though it’s not recognised) come with OpenOffice as the office suite of choice so the word distro should have been adopted by now. I can bet my sanity as well that all lead developers of the project have blogs as well yet the word is flagged. Yes it is possible to add these words to the dictionary but it is always these small bugs that are irritating.

What I found interesting even ironic though is that the word ‘Microsoft’ is accepted yet the project is a competitor of Microsoft Office. Even the word ‘ironic’ itself is flagged and the options that I’m given are pretty daft. While I consider myself an apostle of open source, truth is it is still light years away when most people will choose OpenOffice against its proprietary brother from Redmond.
