Open source software is not only wonderful because it is free; it is also more environmental to download your program online. This way you are not purchasing a disk.The open source platform is also very encouraging to programmers. They allow programmers to contribute to the software, possibly making ad ons, or other options for the program. This helps programmers with employment by mentioning their contribution to the open source platform.
I use open source software for personal and business use, and find it a pleasure to use. Open source software has helped me with advertising for our personal home businesses. Here is a few I have had the opportunity to use and enjoy.
Scribus
This program is an open source publisher. It works like Microsoft publisher but does not cost you any money. This saves you about 200 dollars. It works like Microsoft word, but enables you to make newsletters, and save them as a PDF. You can join the forum, which is done via email. People have used this program to create and publish a book.
Inkscape
If you are looking for a program similar to corel draw or illustrator this one would be the one to use. It is very similar to paint by Microsoft. You have a pen, pencil and shapes. This program is wonderful for the creative at heart, the web designer, or the artist.
OSAP
Open source accounting suite is for accounting purposes for small to medium size businesses. It can be used for churches and charities too. Cost centre, reporting, budgeting and donations are some of the features this program has. An accounting ledger is also a part of OSAP.
This is only a few to get you started on your quest for open source. I suggest using a site called sourgeforge.net. They have links to many open source platforms in categories for you to find them easier. I find their list is very extensive, and one of the best ones I have come across on the internet.
Another worthy site to invest some time reading is www.opensource.org
They speak of organic software which is the open source software movement. Wonderful site with plenty of information to get you started to participate with this worthy movement of software.
Community is important to learn about new open source being released and learning and sharing from other open source contributors and users. I suggest a forum called www.opensourcegroups.com

You’re making this wonderful software sound like crap. Never compare ANYTHING to MS Paint.
microsoft paint is a wonderful tool to use, they also just released an upgrade, I said the word similiar, the word similiar means closely resembling, some of the features on inkscape is in MS paint
