Make a Checklist on MS Word (Vista) 1

Always wanted to make a checklist on MS Word, but never really knew how? Are you still using the “Tick” bullet to mark off things you did electronically? Not quite sure how to make a checklist with the VISTA version of MS Word?

Here’s how to go about it:

Firstly , do you want to make a checklist that you are going to print and use? or do you want to make a checklist that you could fancily click at on your PC?

If you just want to make a checklist of the printable version, it’s easy. Follow this:

1. In your word document, Click at the INSERT Tab, that’s the one after the HOME tab.

It will have sub menus like Pages, tables, illustrations, links, header&footer, text, symbols, etc.

On the Tables tab, click at the tiny arrow pointing down, you will get a mini-table drop down menu. As you scroll your mouse over this table (without clicking anything), you will notice that the table rows X columns automatically changes depending upon the surface of the table you cover from the left corner of the table).

Now, stop playing and hover the mouse till you get 2X2 Table and click. A table would be automatically be inserted into your document. Adjust the size of the columns and on the first row, mention the headings like Serial Number/Task Number, Things to do, etc. To add more columns, simply right click and select add row to the left or right where you please.

Fill in the details of the list you want to make. For an example, I’ve taken Summer Resolutions. Let’s see, I would want to clean the house everyday, cook two meals a day, take time for a hobby, make a workout routine, buy the barbeque items, plan beach parties, apply for a vacation! This is how it looks after I’m done adding them to the table:

Now, place the cursor on the empty cell on the “Track” Column. On the Insert tab, you will see a “Symbols” Sub menu. When you click at that, go to the “More symbols…” button. Click it.

A small window would pop up. Select the symbol font as Wingdings. Select the check box icon (you can also see that there are 3D check boxes ~ the ones with the shadow). After selecting the icon, click at the “Insert” button on the right hand bottom of that pop up window.

NOTE : That the pop up window does not close but your icon has already been inserted into the empty cell. If you click insert again, it will only add one more check box to the one you already placed. Yes, there’s nothing wrong with your application, that’s just the way it is. Click at the next empty spot on your cell and click insert on Symbol pop up window. Once you’ve finished inserting the check boxes, close the symbols window. You’re almost done!

Now all you’ve got left to do is center align all the check boxes to make it look good. You can also remove the table frame to make it look nice. Simply select the entire table (click at the small box on the left hand corner of the table, it should look like this light blue tiny box with a four cross arrow – ). Right click the selection and choose Borders and shading…

A pop up window will give you 3 tabs as options. Choose the borders tab, select none and click OK.

Adjust the alignment of the contents, Voila! your simple printable version of a list is ready! Do not forget to SAVE the document.

I make it look so difficult to make a list and of course there are short cut methods to make a list. It would be wrong on my part if I did not tell you that there’s an easier way. If you click at New Document, in the pop up window, there are several inbuilt options, Lists is one of them….Check them out, saves time as it’s only a download away.

Happy List Making…..The next part, I’ll elaborately explain how to make the soft copy list. The one you click at and it automatically checks the box!

I’ve dumped MS Word off of my Vista operated laptop and installed Open Office instead. Will it work with this?

I always thought Open Office as something to have fascinated me for the concept of open source as against its competitors,…George, I will be making an elaborate explanation for OO soon. will keep you posted! Btw, by dumped MS Word, you mean you’ve stopped using it?

Thanks so much for showing screen images for all this. I am a visual/hands on type of learner. I know how to do the basics when it comes to word/excel etc, but never could figure out how to make a check list!
