How to Remove a File or Folder Icon From Your Desktop Without Deleting It

This is how to take a non-shortcut icon off your desktop w/o deleting it.

It happens to all of us.  Somehow, in some way or another, a file or folder ends up on our desktop, and since it’s not a shortcut, right-clicking and hitting delete will completely delete it, not just take the icon away like with a shortcut.  So, how do you make it go away?  The easiest and fastest way is simply to drag and drop it into another folder using Windows Explorer.  Just go to My Computer or My Documents or whatever, and click the icon and hold down the mouse and drag it into the folder you opened.  If it’s just a readme or something you will probably never bother with, you can put it wherever, into a junk folder if you want to make one.  If it is something you will want to access once in awhile, like a picture or a Word document, put it where you would normally put a file like that.  If it is a program file, you might want to drag it into the folder with the other files for the program.

Good Luck!
