Become a Fast, Accurate Typist

Learn to type with good speed and accuracy.

Is your productivity level not as high as it should be? Is your typing too slow and inaccurate? If you are not a fast, accurate typist, you are losing out in terms of shortening your earnings potential and not being very productive while doing work that requires a lot of typing. You will learn how to improve your typing speed.

First Step: The first thing you have to do is stop being a hunt-and-peck typist who spends a lot of time searching for a particular key to hit. You can solve this problem by becoming very familiar with the keyboard.

Second Step: Once you become familiar with the keyboard, you need to retain what you learned. It is helpful to practice typing a lot each day until you really get the hang of it.

Third Step: It is important to use certain resources to practice with. One thing you can do is practice typing articles and stories. Another thing you can do is do typing exercises online. Two web sites that provide good typing exercises are Learn 2 Type and Typing Test.

Fourth Step: Once you begin doing exercises, you have to be patient. You should not expect to greatly improve overnight.

Fifth Step: In order to consistently hit any key without trouble on your first attempt, it is vital to develop good hand-eye coordination. You can accomplish this by touching a mark on a wall with each finger at least two or three times a week.

Sixth Step: Before you begin typing, you have to have your hands in the proper resting spot. From left to right, the fingers on your left hand should be on key A, key S, key D and key F. From left to right, the fingers on your right hand should be on key J, key K, key L and key;. Once you move a hand to type a letter in a row above or below the middle row, you must return your hand to the natural set position, with your fingers being slightly above the keys.

Seventh Step: In order to succeed, it is vital to use the proper fingering. For example, you must use the fifth finger on left hand to type an A and use the fourth finger on your right hand to type an O.

Eighth Step: Good timing is crucial. You must avoid hitting the space bar before you finish typing a word and you must avoid hitting a particular key before you hit the one you are supposed to hit. For example, if you must type “before”, you must avoid typing an E before you type a B.

Ninth Step: You must develop control over your weak fourth finger. For example, I have learned to raise the fourth finger on my right hand before typing “you” to avoid typing an O before typing a Y.

Follow these steps to improve your typing!
