Tools of the trade. Some expensive, some not, all very useful.
It’s a software-jungle out there. If you are looking for high quality stuff to make your life easier, here’s a few of my favourites.
Remote administration apps:
- Visionapp’s vRD 2009. Relatively pricy, but very good and comprehensive framework for enterprises. The strong points are its single centralized console and multi-protocol support. vRD 2009 also supports a variety of operating systems, including Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, as well as Citrix environments.
- TeamViewer. This is one of those apps you just fall in love with instantly. Whether you just want to help a friend or if you support customers/clients behind a variety of firewall and network configurations, you will be astonished by the easy task it becomes with TeamViewer. Supports both Windows and Mac OS X, and is free for personal non-commercial use. A license for professional use is also, in my opinion, very reasonably priced.
- RealVnc. Good old cross-platform workhorse.
- Dameware Mini Remote Control. Another personal favorite of mine. Perfect if you got a Windows only environment, great value for money, great utility and effortless setup. If your machine park is very old, you might want to check if the performance is an issue with the client.
