Gimp : Edit Picture with Mask Technique

This tutorial is about to edit picture where we change the background to gray but the color of subject remain original color.

  1. Open file
  2. layer panel will show your picture as “background” layer
  3. Right click the layer and choose Duplicate layer
  4. Now you have Background copy
  5. With background copy, click color-hue saturation and set as below (or any value as you wish)

6. Now your image on background copy turn to gray

7. Still with background copy, right click on the layer, click Add Layer Mask and then choose White (full opacity)

8. Now on background copy layer will have 2 layers. One layer contain the image and another layer is white (mask layer)

9. Click on white layer

10. In this tutorial I use paths tool to select subject. Click Paths tool and then click around the object. Edit path if needed. Then, click on Selection from path

11. Now click on Paintbrush Tool. Make sure you set foreground/background color as black. Now click and drag on selected subject. The color will turn to original color

12. select none the object. You can still change the color to gray by changing the foreground/background to white color and then click and drag on the area (make sure you work on mask layer and no need to select again using paths tool)
