When you bought your PC it was propobly really fast. You booted in to Windows within seconds and application ran fast and smoothless. After a while, this speed are gone. Maybe you ask yourself if it’s time to buy a new PC. Well, it’s not. You can turbo charge your computer with these simple tips.

It’s not very hard, but it takes a couple of hours. This time however, is very well spent. You will get your PC back to the speed it had when you bought it, without paying a dime!

  1. Remove autostart applications. When Windows boots up, it runs a lot of autostarted applications. The most of them are installed when you install a new software. And most of these are totally meningless for your daily work. By removing them, you get back a lot of CPU power and memory. Open Start -> Run and enter “msconfig”. Under Autostart you’ll find all autorun software. Just click the useless programs away. Check out Bleeping Computers to find out what a startup application do.
  2. Clean up temporary files. The best free software to clean up your harddrive and remove crap files is CCleaner. It’s easy to use and it will remove all temporary files quick. Your harddrive will thank you and your system will by much more stable.
  3. Remove spyware and adware. It’s way to easy to get infected by spyware. Thankfully, there’s a lot of antispyware that can clean your PC from these unwanted programs. I would recommend Spybot Search & Destroy. It will not only delete all spyware and adware, but will also protect your PC against future attacks.
  4. Defrag your harddrive. When you use your computer, the harddrive will be more and more fragmented. This means that the files will no longer be placed in one order, but instead be splitted in many small segments, placed on diffrent places on the drive. This will natturally slow down the access time when loading applications and files. Use Defraggler, a free and very good defragmentation software.
  5. Uninstall software you don’t use. Do you really use all software installed on your PC? Propobly not. By removing them you save a lot of disc space, you make your system quicker and more stable, and you also get rid of possible security holes that exists in the software. A freeware I highly recommend is Revo Uninstaller. This is much better then Windows own installation removal applet withing Controlpanel.
  6. Tweak you Windows. By using a tweaking software, like Tweak Now for XP and Vista, you can deactivate functions you don’t need. The utility also gives you a lot of possibilities to make your system more personal.
