How to Remove User Accounts From the Log On Screen

As of yet I haven’t found a way to reverse this but I do believe the answer is in the TRK disk.

You have an account that you use often but want it hidden so no one but you can access it.  This works in Xp and Vista but unfortunatly as of yet I have been unable to reverse the changes in Vista.  The answer may lie in the TRK disk I talked about in my previous article.

What you want to do first is open up regedit in the search/run program.  This will open up your registry editory.

Click on Computer/HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon.

When you have Winlogon selected, right click and then click new Key.  Name this new key SpecialAccounts.  This is case sensitive so make sure that you spell it as I have spelled it.  Now you want to have the new key you just created selected and then you want to right click and create another new Key.  This time you want to name it UserList.

After you have that done you probably want to get to hiding that account from the logon screen.  What you want to do now is right click on UserList and click new DWORD (32bit) Value.  You’ll want to name this new value by the name of the account you want hidden.  *Warning* If you are using Vista make sure you have a backup Administrator account to delete this string in the registry.  You can potentially lose the ability to log on to that account.

For Xp users there is a simple way to log onto an account that has been removed from the logon screen.  All you have to do is CTRL+ALT+DEL twice to get to a screen that will ask you to put in the account name and password.

For Vista users I will be researching a way to log onto these accounts that have been hidden from the logon screen.  I know of one way but that defeats the purpose of removing them in the first place.
