I’m sure you’ve used the dashboard before, and it as you know it is a great feature of OSX. But on top of what you know there are lots of little easter eggs and tricks built into the dashboard. Anyway here are the main ones that you should know.
A lot of people don’t know how to get widgets online from the Apple site. There are tons and tons of widgets that people and Apple have made and they are so easy to install. You can get games, business widgets, RSS feed type widgets so you can see what’s new on your favorite blog or website. In fact, there’s a widget for just about, anything! To install the widgets on your dashboard follow the steps bellow:
1. Click here to go to the Apple widget download page. Once there scroll down to the categories and select one, then a sub category before clicking on the name of the widget you want to download.
2. Open up the file that materialized on your desktop and follow the on screen instructions that tell you how to install it on your dashboard. Please don’t be daunted as this is very simple and easy. Once you’ve got it go on your dashboard enjoy it! If it isn’t on your dashboard click on the plus button in the corner of the screen and add it there (it should be on the list)
Another cool thing that you can do only on Leopard or Snow Leopard is dashboard web clips. Have you ever wanted to put an image, some text, some widget off the net that there is no dashboard widget for? Then web clips will help you! You can put text, images, games, widgets, news boxes/headlines that update automatically… In fact, you can clip just about, anything! Below are the steps:
- Before you get your hopes up go on Safari and in the left hand corner of the Safari toolbar you should see an icon that is a pair of scissors. If you have this icon, then YAY!, you can do this. If you don’t, sadly you can’t…
- On Safari go onto the web page where the clip is located that you want to get on your dash.
- Click on the scissors icon and hover over the widget, game etc you want to add, it will be highlighted. Now click the add button that appeared just above the toolbar.
Your dashboard will open up on its own and you will see the clip right there on your dashboard!
Now for a few small tips and tricks to finish off. This one is a handy one that lets you delete dashboard widgets quicker. Simply hover over the widget and hold down option. A delete box will appear! Now, while still holding down control, click on it. And, the widget is gone…
This next one is a fun one to see all the cool graphics of the weather widget. Get the weather widget on your dashboard if it already isn’t there. Now hold down apple and option and click on the weather graphic at the top of the widget. Each time you click the weather will change so you can see all it’s graphics!
This last one is really simple but can be useful. On the date widget if you ever wanted to just have the date today instead of the calendar off to the side as well just click on the big date number…
