Google Chrome OS: Operating System

Today, we will be talking about the Google Chrome Operating System. Google anounced that they would be trying to make their operation system called the Chrome OS on 7/07/2009.

Google is planning to use this technology to take over the Operating System world.

The operating system is opensource and free and based on a new technology (rather unused as of yet) called Cloud Computing.

Cloud Computing (By: Wikipedia)

Cloud computing is a style of computing in which dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources are provided as a service over the Internet. Users need not have knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure in the “cloud” that supports them.

Goals

They seem to be aiming to make the OS fast, lightweight, and open source so that it doesn’t take much room on the host computer. Google is seems to be aiming for ease of use and accessibility. The entire computer’s “other stuff” will be running on the cloud computer on the internet so to make the Chrome OS fully functional it needs to be connected to the internet. They will also be completely redesigning the security architecture so that there will be no viruses or malware or security patches/ upgrades.

I don’t know how they plan to do this, but it seems rather … like a project doomed to fail because from what I know from hackers they will keep trying until they find a way to hack into the system and wreak havoc for the end user.

The cloud computer will be hosting all of the operating system’s application meaning that the entire operating system will run from the web and that, without the web, the computer would be nothing usable because all of the operating system’s programs, important system files, and even your files would be hosted on the cloud computer. The cloud computer which will be hosting the applications and making the actual OS run will be capable of the millions of users which will be accessing it and still be crashproof. Don’t know they plan to do that… =].

Target

It will be a very good operating system for those of that spend most of their waking hours on the web. For application developers, the web is the platform and their apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform. The boot time of the computer will be drastically decreased because there is only need to load a very little bit of informantion from the local computer and after then the cloud computer will handle the rest of the stuff. The operating system will run both on x86 and ARM chips. It is rather simple because it is just a Linux Kernel with a new windowing system installed on top of it.

Competition

Microsoft does have a lot lose from this direct from google especially since Chrome is a free alternative to the Microsoft software line. Google’s work on the Chrome Browser will be included in the Chrome OS. Google is first targeting its OS onto netbooks making them to come preloaded with the Chrome OS making it easy to get the Chrome OS without having to download and install it. Then they will be targeting it onto the desktop computers.

Why It May Fail

Well, I won’t plaguarize so I’ll redirect you to this place: HERE

Pre-Loaded

It is very important to note that Google Chrome will come PRE-LOADED on some computers, netbooks at first. That means people do not have to download it to use it, making it easily accesible and a tempting free alternative of an Operating System. Firefox is not such a common browser only because of the fact that it does not come preloaded on most systems making very hard to find out about and many people also dont want to go throught the trouble of downloading and installing a browser, especially when they already have one — Internet Explorer.

Link-and-Lever

Microsoft employed this technique to make its products more popular like Internet Explorer by incorporating it with its Operating System. Another instance when Microsoft attempted to use link and lever is when it made it search engine default in Internet Explorer, Microsoft’s Search. Google, however, then went to the Justice Department to sue Microsoft on the grounds that it was employing Link and Lever techniques.

Now Google itself is using the Link and Lever techniques and will most probably continue to use them in its Google Chrome OS by including Google Components. In a couple of years the Google Chrome OS/ Browser won’t be only that, it will also be:

  • Google Browser
  • Google Gears (offline and online apps, including email, messaging, chat, etc.)
  • Google desktop search
  • Google Earth
  • Open source development platform
  • etc.

This software will be seamlessly integrated with the Google Chrome OS install and you will find yourself clicking on these icons more and more frequently as you use Google Chrome OS.
