Wireless Power – Could It Power Laptops?

Wireless power is mainly being tested in labs, but you can buy some things now that use wireless power… Will it eventually be able to power laptops?

Wireless power is already being used for some everyday things.  One of them is electric toothbrushes, and another, better one is the wireless power pad.  The wireless power pad can power almost any small electrical device you put on top of it.  Like a digital camera or a mobile phone.  Wouldn’t it be cool if you could just place your phone on a pad to recharge it and not have to plug it in?  Here is a picture of the pad:

Now, that is not very useful for laptops, because you want to be able to use it on your lap.  But there are long range versions of this pad being worked on, and now there are even some prototypes that can send energy to devices from two meters or so.  This would be better for a laptop, but it would be annoying to have to stay within two meters of the charger…  You would want it to be able to charge your laptop anywhere in your house.

Though long range electrical cords a quite a long way from being commercial and affordable.  So for now we’ll have to keep using our cords…
