Netbook is a mini laptop as it is contrastingly smaller in size to notebook laptops. Although it had logged great sales in its initial years to a wide range of laptop/electronic gadget users, now it found itself to be perfect for the online content writer. What fearures make it suitable for online writer than a laptop or desktop?
What is a Netbook or Mini Laptop?
- Most of the power consumed is determined significantly by the display screen of a laptop though laptop is still lower in power than a Desktop as it is reduced in terms of many accessories. While the size of desktop monitors was going up, the laptop sizes were going down as their primary goal is to be portable. The sizes (display) usually range from 14 inch to 18 inch wide screen display.

- As technology advanced many laptop manufacturers found it easy to shrink to a 10 inch wide screen size and still have the basic accessories like keyboard, touch pad, USB port, LAN port, VGA port and sometimes sound speakers as well. This came to known as Netbook which is primarily intended to be used for internet surfing and chatting or posting small tweets kind of activities. Actually later more devices came about like pocketsurfer 1 & 2, Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, many smartphones, Samsung Galaxy Tab for the same purpose and some other functions too. Before Netbooks Tablets were good for net browsing as they were small.
- But the cost of a Netbook laptop reduced the market share for other devices with similar function. Now a netbook costs as low as $300 (Rs. 13,300/-) compared to 14 inch laptops starting from $650 (Rs. 22,900/-). For many online writers and internet users this is a good deal.
Why does Netbook Suit an Online Content Writer?
- Netbooks are very small in contrast to a notebook laptop. About 15cm wide and 21cm long, looks about the size of a small paper based notebook. With 10 inch screen it supports 1024×600 resolution and more if the VGA port is used to connect to an external monitor. Though the CPU is based on Intel Atom processor, it is good enough for normal day to day computing needs with 1.6Ghz processor speed. You can’t play high end games on it.

There are several features that make netbook so suitable to online writers:
- Ultra-portable (size and weight): Netbooks are ultra portable. You can take them anywhere and use them at anytime or anywhere even while you are not sitting comfortably as they weigh just about a Kg compared to 3 kgs of a laptop. Don’t you want to write wherever you can?
- Ultra-low power (battery backup time): Netbooks use Atom processor and small display screen with new technologies to enable it use as low power as 8W, compared to 300W of a typical Desktop or 18W of a laptop. This translates to a high battery backup time of up 8 hours (in standby) or 6 hours in working or 13 hours with extra battery on Asus Eee netbooks. Don’t you get annoyed by those power cuts all the time just as you were busy in writing for long hours?
- Mini Display (screen size and resolution): At first the mini display annoys us as it is so small. But for a writer it helps to reduce the screen to only those most needed (word documents), Triond submit page, Bukisa editor page, AC/Helium/Facebook/Twitter/Redgage/Digg/Stumble/GMail etc. so there is no distraction to your writing or online activity. You can reduce resolution to 800×600 (I noticed it on Samsung netbook) to see larger font size and lesser distractions from windows.
- Mini sized keyboard: While the size of keyboard of most netbooks is about 90% of standard size its key is in the depth of keystrokes. In a standard size keyboard, depth of each key press can go as low as 6mm, but with the need to make a Netbook ultra-thin this depth is made about 1mm. This helps you touch type so fast like you never before could do. It initially takes time to adapt to this but it helps later on. Mouse/keyboard combination is same as other laptops better than desktops as there is no space on the right side for numpads and arrow keys you wouldn’t have to stretch right hand far to the right to use the mouse.
- Cost or purchase price: Cost is arguably an important factor for a netbook. But considering that newer ones are coming with 12 inch screens (littler larger than 10 inch) with slightly higher costs, this cost factor is not a significant one now. It ranges from $300 ($269 on Amazon.com) to $450 (Dell, Hp, Samsung). For a Triond or Bukisa writer it can be a good deal. For example, I have accumulated past five months Triond/Bukisa earnings to buy a Netbook this month.
Of all these, the power thing is the primary factor that makes me consider it. Sometimes in summer there are day or night long power outages when days just get wasted unintentionally.
What type of laptop do you use for your online writing? What made you choose it?

thanks for doing this review. very helpful!
I’m saving money for a netbook, it’s very useful for a content writer who is always on the go. Won’t exchange it for an iPad or tablet PC.
Seems to be everyones wish list ! Just some of the things I love about LIVING IN THE 21st CENTURY.
After reading it, I felt like buying the netbook right now

Still trying to figure out what the best laptop, notebook, net book, etc to purchase, so thanks for this!

Thanks to all for your comments.
I have an HP Mini Notebook I bought last year to pursue my blogging and other online endeavors. You should buy one now. It helps me because I don’t have a desktop computer at home. And I can also bring it during travels.
Richie,
That is nice. You have already experienced it. I am going for it certainly.
I have narrowed down my choice to Asus eee and samsung n150. Is hp mini good? It is costlier than all other brands. We can get a Dell of 12 inch. for the same price.
I was wrong on the cost of hp mini. I looked at the prices again. It too was similar to others. Looks like the OS offered for each netbook is different and is adding onto the cost. The extra price for OS is ranging from 1000-2000 depending on xp to windows 7! That dell 12 inch. I talked about is actually with low hard disk capacity and may not be available in the market now.
Asus eee is the usual choice, maybe because it is the cheapest with a trusted brand. It was my first choice but I was thinking Asus is the lowest end in the trusted brands.
That is why when I saw an HP Mini on sale (at a lower price), I took the opportunity and bought it.
Nowadays it is a mobile world.
Having laptops for your official works or other important works has some great benefits.
Shored some good information and awaiting to read more.
