RAM stands for Random Access Memory. This means that it temporary stores files or commands to be used quickly. The reason that temporary files and commands are stored on RAM instead of hard drives is because ram is much quicker to access. Solid state memory is usually nothing compared to normal hard drives. An average size of ram in a PC is only around 1GB-2GB, but a typical hard drive can hold between 100GB-400GB.
