Apple devices have many features that are readily available to users that you might not be aware of. Learn how to get battery life in %, turn your calculator into a scientific calculator, and more!
1. Close a program completely & restart when it freezes.
You can press the ‘Home’ button once to return to the main menu once you start an app, but that doesn’t actually close the process running the app—it just takes you to the main menu. In order to actually close an app—helpful when you app freezes—you have to press the Home button twice (if it doesn’t work, it’s because you’re not doing it quickly enough). This should bring up a panel at the bottom, with the most recent apps run (scroll to the right to see even more). It also serves as “browsing history” for your apps.
2. Your calculator is also a scientific calculator.
Your basic calculator can do far more than arithmetic with a simple trick: turn your device sideways (it takes up to a second so be patient). Voila! You now have a scientific calculator to do logs, roots, brackets, exponents and all that jazz.
3. Give you remaining battery life as percentage.
I don’t know why anyone would want their battery life as a bar, but that’s Apple’s default configuration. To give you a % value or remaining battery and also see the bar visually, go to Settings > General > Usage > ‘Battery Percentage. ON.
4. Customize ringers/alerts & volume the way YOU want.
The default configuration is that you can hear ringers and alerts (they’re pretty loud) even when your volume is turned all the way down. When I first got my iPod, I had an alarm going off every 5 minutes at a meeting and couldn’t figure out how to turn it. Turned the volume off but it didn’t work. So I finally figured out how to make sure there is NO sound whatsoever: Go to Settings > Sounds > ‘Change with Buttons’ ON. Conversely, if you want to keep your volume low, but make sure you can still hear your alarm clock, timers or other alerts, turn ‘Change with Buttons’ OFF.
