How to Keep Your Macbook Battery Healthy

How to keep your MacBook battery healthy with a long life…

MacBook and MacBook Pro’s batteries last quite a long time.  But as they get older, they lose a lot of capacity.  This can happen quite quickly, so you’ll have to spend money buying a new battery.  There are some ways however, to keep your battery healthy with a long life and long usage time.

The best way is to give your battery good cycles.  Pretty much what you do is charge your MacBook or MacBook Pro to 100%, then use it normally without it being plugged in until the battery is completely flat.  You don’t need to use it all up at once, you can sleep it, shut it down etc.  But don’t charge it again until the battery is dead.  Once it is dead, charge it (you can use it while its charging) until it is at 100% again and repeat the cycle.

Another good way is to calibrate your battery every 3 months at least.  Below are the steps to calibrate your MacBook or MacBook Pro’s battery.

  1. Plug your laptop in and let it charge until the light on the power adaptor turns green.
  2. Allow the computer to rest in its fully charged state for at least two hours (with the power still plugged in).  You may use your computer during this period (the adaptor still needs to be plugged in).
  3. Disconnect the computer from the power adaptor while the computer is running and start running it off the battery.  You may use your computer during this period.  When the battery gets low, a battery low warning dialog will appear on the screen.
  4. Save your work.  Keep using your computer until the computer starts to sleep.
  5. Turn off the computer or let it sleep for at least 5 hours.
  6. Connect the power adaptor a leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.
