For the operating system is able to record and read data on hard disk, it must first be developed to enable recording data in an organized fashion, so that they can be found later. This process is called formatting.

There are two types of formatting, called physical format and logical format. The physical format is done in the factory at the end of the manufacturing process, which is to divide the blank disk into tracks, sectors, cylinders and insulates the badblocks (damage to the HD). These markings serve as the tracks of a road, allowing the head to know when reading the disc is and where it should write data. The physical format is done only once, and can not be undone or repeated through software.
