In this article we will discuss in brief ten basic types of computers. These will enable you to identify any type of computer when you come in contact with them. Please bear in mind that any system that accepts data and processes it can be regarded as a computer irrespective of the size and shape as in the case of handheld devices.
Below are the ten types of computers we have in the market. If there is any one I did not include please let me know in the comment section.
1. Personal Computer (PC)
This is the most common type of computer in the market. It is designed for general use. While a Mac is as PC most people relate the term with systems that run the window operating system. PC where first known as microcomputers. They were a complete set of computer built on smaller scale than most huge systems in use by most businesses.
2. Desktop
a pc that is not designed for portability is a desktop computer. The expectation with desktop systems is that you will set up the computer in a permanent location.
3. Laptop
laptop is also called notebooks. They are portable computer that integrate display, keyboard, a pointing device or a track ball, processor, memory, and hard drive all in a battery operated package slightly larger than an average hardcover book.
4. Workstation
The fourth type of computer is a workstation. A workstation is simply a desktop computer that has a more powerful processor, additional memory and enhanced capabilities for performing a special group of task such as 3D graphics or game development.
5. Minicomputer
Another term rarely used any more, minicomputer falls between microcomputers and main frame (enterprise servers).
6. PDA
Personal Digital Assistants (PDA’s) are tightly integrated computers that often use flash memory instead of hard drive for storage. These computers usually do not have keyboards but rely on touch screen technology for user input. They are very light in weight.
7. Server
a computer that has been optimized to provide services to other computers over a network is called a server.
8. Mainframe
This is also known as enterprise servers. In the early days of computing, main frames were usually huge computers that could fill an entire room or even a whole floor. Though, the term mainframe has gradually faded out. What you hear know is enterprise servers. They are large machines processing millions of transactions every day.
