Xp Desktop Icons Appear So Slowly

Have you noticed that on startup your desktop icons appear so slowly? These are the possibilities.

Indexing Service

Indexing Service is a base service that extracts content from files and constructs an indexed catalog to facilitate efficient and rapid searching. It uses a big amount on RAM resources. To disable it, go to Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>Add/Remove Window Components on the left pane. Untick the Indexing Service and click Next.

Application Slow-Down

Go to Control Panel>Network Connections>Right-click your main network connection and select Properties.  Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click Advanced, choose WINS tab. Remove checkmark on Enable LMHOSTS lookup and tick Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Windows XP Icon Cache

Go to Start > My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > Advanced settings>Uncheck the box that reads “Automatically search for network folders and printers“. Enable Show hidden files and folders. Click OK.

Delete the IconCache file from the profile directory – Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data). It will be refreshed on the next reboot.
