Why the USB Pen Drive Will be the Next “DVD”

In just a few years from now, we should start seeing how people are increasingly using a USB pen drive to transport their data, instead of writing a DVD. This article gives the reasons why this is very probable to happen.

A USB pen drive is a discrete removable devices that are generally used to transfer huge amounts of data, at high speed, from one computer to another.

The Benefits of a USB Pen Drive

 1. Very small

They can be easily carried in a pocket and they don’t represent any inconvenient while traveling. They also weigh very little (like 30g) compared to other storage devices.

 2. Wide range of storage capacities

As we speak, the pen drives support from 64 MB to 128 GB of storage space, being able to hold much more than a DVD and even a Blu-ray disc. By being so small and easy to handle, anyone can improve a computer’s storage with no hassle whatsoever by just plugging them in the USB slot.

 3. Durable design

The data that is stored on the pen drive can be retained from 10 to 20 years (several times more than a DVD or even a hard disk drive). It is also immune to scratches and dust, two of the causes that most affect the other types of disks’ lifetime. Some of them even retain the data while under water.

 4. Most suitable for erase/write cycles

Pen drives can be rewritten up to 500,000, which is 500 times more than a rewritable DVD. This is because its use can be so flexible and it’s good for travel. People can replace the data on it as many times as they want, with almost no influence to its lifetime.

 5. High Compatibility

All new computers, whether they are PC’s, laptops or netbooks have USB ports so the pen drives work on all of them. Plus most pen drives are compatible with Windows (ME/2000/XP), Mac OS (8.6 and above) and Linux Kernel (2.4 and above) without drivers. The new ones have support for Windows Vista and the latest version of the other OS’s as well. Also file types can be copied to and from a pen drive, including documents, media files and applications.

The Next “DVD”

The DVD is becoming obsolete, but even so, Blu-ray and HD-DVD technologies haven’t had much success at all. Meanwhile, the pen drives are a hot market that grows rapidly. This causes news versions and capacities to appear quickly and in the same time it makes the older versions more affordable for the mainstream, increasing the rate of adoption.

Profit margins

Pen drives profit margins vary a lot depending on how new they are on the market and their storage capacity. But even at the low end pen drives are a hot market and can be easily sold with great profit margins. At the high end of the market, the latest versions of the USB pen drives can have even hundreds of dollars in profit per unit sold.
