The Slowing Pc Market: A Sign of The Times?

Is the slowing PC market a sign of the times? It seems that tablets and smartphones are the future. Here is a detailed analysis of this intriguing topic.

The Mobile Market

The buzz today is about mobile devices. Smartphones and tablets are the buzz at the moment and the market for them is just exploding. Don’t believe me? Statistics don’t lie…

-In 2011 66 million tablets were sold

-In 2011, for the first time ever, there were more smartphones sold than personal computers. 489 million smartphones were shipped in 2011.

The PC Market

In sharp contrast to the mobile market, the PC market is stagnating and perhaps even in decline. In 2012, PC sales are down 1.4% from last year. Recently, Microsoft has reported dismal losses for the first time ever (although the aggressive Windows 8 marketing may be to blame).

???—–The slowing PC Market: A sign of the times?—-???

Is the slowing PC Market a sign of the times? Is the PC becoming irrelevant and will it be replaced be tablets and Smartphones? The answer is both yes and no.

Let me first answer the question about whether or not the PC is becoming irrelevant. My answer to that is no. There is still so much you can’t do on mobile devices that makes having a PC essential. Can you type super fast on a touch screen? No, you can’t. Can you play games like Call of Duty and Skyrim on tablets or smartphones? Again, no you can’t. How about advanced video and photo editing? See my point? Personal computers will not become obsolete until tablets and smartphones get better processing capabilities. Most people still have a personal computer whether or not they own mobile devices.

Is the slowing PC sales a sign of the times? Yes it is. The PC market is old (Over 20 years old). Most people in the United States already have desktops and laptops. The market is slowing because there is a lesser demand for them simply because people already have the product that is being sold. On the other hand, the smartphone market is only about 6 years old and it has only been relevant for the last 2-3 years. There is still hordes of people who are eager to buy these new products. Thus, when the smartphone and tablet market becomes as old as the PC market, it too will slow down.

So, thats my perspective on the PC and mobile markets. I hope you enjoyed this article!
