Simple Guide to Using SSH with Your iPod Touch or iPhone

This guide is for accessing your iPod Touch’s iPhones files and folders through SSHing. You must have a Jailbroken iPod Touch or iPhone. If you have the 3.0 firmware I do not recommend you use this guide, but you can try if you really want.

Step 1:

Go onto your Cydia App on your iPod/iPhone. Tap the Search tab and type SSH.

Step 2:

Download one of the Apps listed, I recommend SSH Daemon or OpenSSH.

Step 3:

Enable your SSH and Wi-Fi on your iPod/iPhone by going into your SSH App or BossPrefs and tapping the appropriate icons.

Step 4:

You will need an SSH program installed on your PC or Laptop. I suggest WinSCP; search for that and go through the installation process.

Step 5:

After installation go into your Settings App on your iPod/iPhone and tap Wi-Fi. Under Choose a Network tap the arrow next to the Router you are using. Note down the IP Address.

Step 6:

Run WinSCP on your PC or laptop, then make sure you are on the Session section. There should be a prompt for Host Name, Port Number, User Name, Password and a Private Key File. Don’t worry about the Private Key File or the File Protocol drop down below it.

Step 7:

In Host Name you need to type the IP address you took down earlier. The Port Number should be set to 22. In the User Name box type root. In the password box type alpine.

User Name: root

Password: alpine

Step 8

Click Save… and go to Stored Sessions. You should have one session stored (root@YourIPAddress) double-click that to Login. At this time your iPod your iPod/iPhone should be connected to your PC or laptop by USB and should have Wi-Fi and SSH enabled.

Step 9:

Once you first Login it is likely you will see an error. It’ll say something like; Could not connect. It will have a count down of about 15 seconds before it attempts to reconnect, on this second attempt it will almost always connect. So you may have to wait sometimes for it to connect.

Anyway thank-you for reading, please comment if you have any queries.
