For those who are unfamiliar with the product, Dragon NaturallySpeaking is a speech recognition software package developed and sold by Nuance Communications for use with Windows personal computers. What this computer software does is translate a user’s speech into actions or words on the computer. Basically you put on a headset and “talk” instead of typing. But Dragon software offers so much more. In fact, Dragon software allows a user to “train” their software to do practically any commands. This allows Dragon users to do pretty much anything they can do with their mouse as well as their keyboard.
Typically, spoken words will appear in an active toolbar as the user speaks into the headset and then transcribes the spoken words into actions or words depending on the setting of the window. The software will work for more than one user but will be especially designed for one user. This main user will set up a profile and will need to read some basic passages to get started. This helps the program get acquainted with the user’s voice. It can even be set up for users with specific accents such as Southern accents or Northwestern accents (Think Boston) Yes, the Dragon software will set itself to your voice, your accent, no matter how you sound or where your from.
The program can be trained to perform actions such as opening the default Internet browser, or clicking hypertext links on web pages. For example, a user looking for the daily sports can use a command sequence like the following: “Open Explorer” (the software opens a new window) “Go to yahoo.com” (enters web address) “sports” (the system will recognize the Sports Hyperlink and select it) In fact, the software is so advanced that if the users speaks a command that could refer to more than one option, a numbering system will appear listing all the options with a number and the user can select the number that corresponds with the option they intended.
Naturally speaking is a great product for students or work professionals that are required to type long papers or lots of information. Great for transcriptionists or writers, the software makes a long paper much more easily typed and completed. Dragon software is a little pricy which may make some buyers apprehensive to purchase the software, but a consumer who picks up the box may not realize all the capabilities of the product. This software offers more abilities than just typing spoken words, although it does that very well after some basic “trainings”. The more you use the software the better it will recognize your voice, and the more time you put into training the program, the more command and special features you can get from the software. I think everyone can think of some instances where they had information they wanted to type but once they got started typing, they lost track of their thought process during the time it takes to get it typed out. With Dragon Software you can type it all out as fast as you think it and say it.
Overall, Dragon NaturallySpeaking is a very good product that can be very beneficial for those who type a lot. Take it from me, I use the software both for school and writing purposes and I have become spoiled to how much faster I can get papers and articles completed.
