Operating system is the most important system software. Computer must have an operating system to run other software programs. Operating System performs basic task, such as sending output to the display, screen recognizing input from the keyboard, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral device such as disk drives and printers.
For large systems, It has greater responsibilities and powers for the Operating System. It’s like traffic cop-it makes sure that users and different programs running at the same time do not interfere with each other. Operating system is also responsible for security, to ensure that they cannot access the system for unauthorized users.
Classification of Operating System:
1. Multi-user - At the same time, two or more users can run a program.
2. Multi-processing – On more than one CPU, it will support running a program .
3. Multi-tasking – Allows one or more program to run concurrently.
4. Multi-threading – Allows single program to run concurrently.
5. Real Time – Inputs responds instantly. General purpose of operating system such as UNIX and DOS , are not Real Time.
