Murder Mystery Apps

Five of the very best mystery apps for the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad.

If you enjoy ‘who dunnits’ and detective shows and novels, you’ll probably love all five of these murder mystery apps…

1) GHOST TRICK: PHANTOM DETECTIVE (iPad, iOS 4.3, Free, v1.0. Also works on iPod Touch)

This app takes top spot because, not only is it a very clever and fun game, but you can try chapters one and two completely free of charge! In Ghost Trick you take on the role of Sissel, a man who has recently been murdered and has to race against the clock to catch the killer before his soul vanishes. Part of the point-and-click game genre, you ‘possess’ and manipulate objects using your powers of the dead and a variety of actions become available to you depending on what you possess. Protect key witnesses, bring the culprits to justice and discover the truth!

2) HECTOR: BADGE OF CARNAGE  (iPhone, iOS 3.0, £2.49/$3.99, v1.2)

Probably not suitable for kids, Hector: Badge of Carnage is a riot from start to finish. As the eponymous detective Hector, you must help the police defeat a dangerous sniper solving a series of puzzles along the way. This game is very funny (albeit a little dark) with tongue-in-cheek violence in parts and comes highly recommended.

3) SHERLOCK HOMES AND THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (iPad, iOS 4.2, £2.99/$4.99, v1.0)

You can actually try this app for free and – if you enjoy it enough (which I think you will!) – you can pay to unlock the full game. Faithful to the original storyline, Henry Baskerville needs Sherlock’s help to break the centuries-old curse. Stalk the halls of Baskerville Hall in search of clues, crack puzzles and solve the murder case in this utterly engrossing app.

4) NCIS: THE GAME FROM THE TV SHOW (iPhone, iOS 3.0, £0.69/$0.99, v1.4.2)

If you enjoy the NCIS shows then you’ll probably love this fun (and great value) app. Solve five thrilling cases by searching the crime scenes for evidence, examine the forensics in the lab, stake out suspects and even bring people in for questioning!

5) TOUCH DETECTIVE (iPhone, iOS 3.0, Free, v1.1. Also works on iPod Touch and iPad)

Although Touch Detective is rather text heavy, it is free, easy to get to grips with and has an overall game-play formula which works well. Taking on the role of fledgling detective Mackenzie you must solve mysteries in a spooky town by searching the environment for clues, asking people questions and dealing with puzzles.
