I recently uncovered some great techniques to get Apps and Games installed on the LG Rumor Touch for FREE.
Cell phones are just the new and coming thing this age. The more time goes on, the more cell phones can do. Google’s Android OS has showed us that a phone can be capable of almost anything, and iPhoneOS has showed us that a phone can be elegant and just as powerfull.
What do you do if your on a tight budget though? I recently went out and bought a LG Rumor Touch, through Virigin Mobile (Don’t be discouraged, this works for Sprint as well). Now only Virgin Mobile and Sprint has the ability to cell these phones with their service, and as everyone knows, or some should, Sprint and Virgin Mobile Lock Down almost everything about these phones.
Some of the things you can’t do:
- Install Java Apps
- Install Java Games
- Download Ringtones
- Get Ringtones sent to your phone
The things that I’m going to show you that are possible:
- Installing Java Apps
- Installing Java Games
(We will cover ringtones in my next article, but yes, they are possible to!)
- A MicroSD Card (Can be bought cheap at KMart/Walmart for around $10)
- A USB Data Cord for your phone (Should of been included with the phone)
- A Brain (They come standard when you’re born)
How to do it:
ATTENTION: THERE IS A NEW PROGRAM THAT WILL DO A MAJORITY OF THIS WORK AUTOMATICALLY FOR YOU, IT IS CALLED RUMORTOUCHED. IT IS AVAILABLE FOR FREE DOWNLOAD IN MY NEW ARTICLE HERE. You can still use the old method below to do it manually…
Alright, you just went out and got your MicroSD card, if you didn’t have one already. I bought mine soon after I got the phone because the LG Rumor Touch has limited space on the phone (I think its around 50 some MB). So this is what you need to do.
Plug your USB Data cable into your LG Rumor Touch, when the option comes up to Connect to PC select YES. Now your phone should say “Connected to PC” and some more information below it, displaying a White Icon above with a blue arrow circling around the icon. Your LG Rumor Touch is now in Data Mode.
Your Computer should now detect a new External Drive. This is your LG Rumor Touch.
“Removable Disk (E:)” Is what my LG Rumor Touch’s MicroSD card came up as.
Now click on your LG Rumor Touch MicroSD Card in Windows Explorer and create a new folder called “APPS”. It must be spelt exactly as I have spelt it without the quotes (”").
Your phones MicroSD should have the “APPS” folder made now, and should be located like so:
Now you have your folder created and everything is looking good. When you create that “APPS” folder it makes a secret menu in your “My Stuff” folder in your phone. At the very bottom of the “My Stuff” folder you WILL see something called “Media Card”. This is only going to happen when you place a application on game in the folder.
This next part is simple, you need to get some games or apps and place them in the folder on your MicroSD card.
I have used the Free Web Browser “BOLT” for this example. I have also included it for free download below:
Ok so you have no download BOLT, created your APPS folder in your LG Rumor Touch, and now you need to extract the contents of the BOLT.ZIP and get ready to upload them to your phone.
One thing I want to explain:
Some phones need both a .JAD file with the .JAR file for installations to work correctly. The LG Rumor Touch is one of these phones. If you happen to download a application or game that doesn’t have one, there is a free tool called JADMaker that you can use to make a JAD. Compatibilty with this software is limited, and compatibility with applicatons and games on the LG Rumor Touch is limited as well, so please don’t expect perfect results.
Once you have read the above statement please continue. This BOLT.ZIP has both a .JAD and .JAR inside, a .JAD file is a informational file for the installation process that some phones require. Without the .JAD the installation will fail, and .JAD files must always be named the same exact way as the .JAR that it is related with.
Now you need to go under MY STUFF >> MEDIA CARD and you should see Bolt located within. Now you can tap on the Bolt App and it will open a installation panel and at the bottom you should see two buttons, hit the button to install the application. It should say “Downloading..” and then “Saving..” and show a check mark.
NOTE: Sometimes it takes a couple of minutes to show new files added to the “APPS” folder, I have come across this problem many times. The best thing for you to do is restart your phone, and I have also come across a quick fix by taking out, and re-inserting the MicroSD card, but the second option doesn’t always work. Just RESTART your phone for faster results!
Now depending on what you downloaded and installed will depend on where it shows up. Most “Official” games will add itself to the Games section of your phones. Everything is (Games and Apps) will be in the applications section and you can feel free to use them as much as you want! Just be aware that this phone wasn’t ment for what we are doing, and I heard through good sources that LG blocked this option for normal users because it was just to buggy when trying to run some APPS or Games, but there are A LOT out there that do work, and you will be able to check them out in my coming articles as well.
I hope this article helped out, and I plan on writting a lot more for and about this phone so please stay up to date with my artcles! They will help you out tremendously! Questions or comments can be left below.
