If your a gamer like me, you want the best performance out of your machine. In the steps below I will be showing you is how to change your user interface (UI), decreasing appeal but increasing performance.
-Read Entire Guide First.

Confused? Let me explain: if your running Windows XP, then your computer is using excessive memory to run the UI. Although a similar method may help with Windows 98, 2000, Me, Vista this guide is strictly Windows XP. Now, your memory are these sticks that give you the ability to run multiple programs with no lag (RAM).

Checking your memory.

  1. Have a clear desktop, with no programs running other then your web browser.
  2. Click “Start”
  3. Find “My Computer”
  4. Right Click “My computer” and click “Properties”
  5. A window similar to the one below will appear. To locate your RAM look below.

If you have more then 2.0 GB of RAM,  you don’t need to take any steps further because you are at the max possible memory. If you have 1.00 GB or RAM or lower then proceed.

Increasing the speed

  • Click the “Advanced” tab.

  • Then click “settings” under performance.

  • Make sure you are on the “Visual Effects” tab, then choose “Custom”.
  • Make everything unselected except the four I have checked.

  • Click “OK” Then “OK” Again.

Summary

In essence, what you are doing is removing all the fade and shadow effects which consume memory (RAM). The effect may not be evident immedietly, but will be once you run programs that consume a lot of memory. Monitor your performance before and after the changed by:

  1. Choose a program that consumes a lot of memory. I ran firefox with multiple tabs displaying video content.
  2. Right click the start menu, and open “Task Manager”
  3. Click on the “Processes” Tab
  4. Locate and record the memory used by the selected program.
  5. Make the changes.
  6. Check the memory again
  7. For me, the memory used by firefox, with the same tabs open decreased by about 5%
