You probably heard of Homebrew applications and games for PSP. Maybe you want to play your games off the Memory Stick instead of dragging a bunch of UMDs around?
The solution is in the Custom Firmwares. Learn how to install them here.
This tutorial is made for installing a Custom Firmware on model 1000. If you have firmware higher than 5.03, than this tutorial will NOT work for you.
Check
Here is how to check what firmware you have.
- First go to the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which is the main menu
- Go left to the Settings icon
- Go down until you reach System settings
- Press X
- Go down all the way to the bottom and open System information (it’s second from the bottom)
If your System Software shows version 5,03 or LOWER, you are ready to go.
Downloads
Things you will need to download :
- Official PSP 5.03 Firmware (if you already have 5.03, you can skip this)
- ChickHEN Homebrew Enabler
- HellCat Recovery Flasher
- Official PSP 3.71 Firmware
NOTE: You will need WinRar do open archives you downloaded.
Installing 5.03
ChickHEN only works on firmware 5.03, so you will have to install it first.
Steps:
- Connect your PSP to the computer
- Navigate to PSP/GAME folder
- If there isn’t an UPDATE folder, create one (pay attention to caps)
- Copy the EBOOT.PBP to the PSP/GAME/UPDATE and disconnect the PSP
- To install the update, you need a minimum of 78% battery charge, so make sure you have at least 80%
- On your PSP navigate to Game -> Memory Stick and open it. Run the 5.03 installation file
- Agree to the terms of install and wait untill the install is complete.
- After the installation restart the PSP and connect it to the computer.
Running ChickHEN
The ChickHEN is the key! This little app will allow us to temporarily run homebrew apps on PSP !
Steps:
- Connect your PSP to the computer
- Extract the contents of ChickHENR2.rar you downloaded to a separate folder on desktop
- Open that folder and copy h.bin file (you could only see h) to the root of your PSP(Note: The root it a place where all your folders, like PSP,PHOTO,VIDEO etc, are.)
- Now open the PHOTO folder (if you cant find it on your PSP, create one and use caps!)
- Now go to ChickHENR2 folder on your desktop and open the PHAT folder
- Copy the eggsploit.tiff (you could see only eggsploit) to the PSP’s PHOTO folder
- Here goes the hardest part. Disconnect your PSP and in XMB navigate to Photo -> Memory Stick and wait for thumbnails to load.
- There are two cases here. Your PSP will freeze and shutdown after 10 seconds OR it will show strange lines and signs on the screen and then it will restart. You must repeat the process until the second case happens. (Note : This is probably take a couple of tries, it usualy takes five to me)
- After the restart navigate to Settings -> System Settings and check your PSP version. It should write 5.03 ChickHEN. Warning: Do NOT turn your PSP off until your are done with Custom Firmware installation!
- One more time, connect the PSP to the computer and this time copy the RECOVERY folder from the archive to /PSP/GAME/ on your memstick, so that you get a /PSP/GAME/RECOVERY/ folder containing the
EBOOT file. - Also extract the OFFICIAL Firmware 3.71 to your desktop, rename it from EBOOT to 371 and copy it to the /PSP/GAME/RECOVERY/ folder.
Installing Custom Firmware
Now when we have all the files required copied to the PSP, we can start the install.
Steps:
- Disconnect the PSP from computer.
- To install the update, you need a minimum of 50% battery charge, but make sure you have at least 80% (same step as for installing 5.03)
- On the PSP navigate to Game -> Memory Stick and open it. Run the Hellcat recovery flasher 1.6
- Choose either of “I agree” options
- Press X so the Target FW shows 3.71
- Press down once and press X (option Install CFW)
- Wait until the copying is over
- Restart
Thats it ! After the restart you can go to Settings -> System Settings and check your PSP version! It should write 3.71 M33-4
Hooray !
You can go and download homebrew applications and games, and actually run them
Good luck, and take care (of your psp
) !

“You must repeat the process until the second case happens.”
read it 5 times.
I did this a week ago on my cousin’s PSP and I experienced your problems. Just keep trying… Thats the key… It took us around fifty(50!) tries to get it working.
Remember, It wont miraculously happen the first time; repeat the process until it happens. period.
