How to Combine Multiple PDF Files Using Pdf24 Editor

Splitting pdf files is easy – simply print only those pages needed with any free pdf print drivers like cutepdf. But how to combine multiple pdf files into a single one? And possibly adding other features like password protection, reduce file size etc?

When I was make online applications for schools for my sons I had to submit supporting documents like his previous exam results.  So I had to scan the documents, with each page saved as a separate file.  I did not have a business-grade scanner which can auto feed and scan multiple pages with lightning speed.  And the school reports are bound and I did not want to damage them so I was scanning them page by page off my cheap multi-function printer, with every page taking about half a minute.

So when I found out the uploading page only allowed a single pdf or jpg file it was like a shock.  Well I could try with zipping the files together and hoping that the upload won’t check the file extension.  But that’s just a bet.  Further, will the teachers have difficulty opening a zip file?  I don’t want to take my child’s application at risk.  And the last resort is to send by hard copy.  But I have already spent several hours filling out the online form, plus my hand writing wasn’t presentable.  So I decided to search for tools to combine the pdf files before resorting to sending in the hard copy.

And I was lucky.  This PDF24 Editor is a free tool which not only allows you to combine files but also allows you to extract pages, change author and title, add password, and much more.

After downloading and installing the software from here, follow the below simple steps to combine the pdf files.

Step 1 Open the pdf files.  You can click File->Open or simply drag and drop the files onto the right hand side of the program box.

Step 2 Select the files.  You need to press Ctrl key while selecting the files.

Step 3 Combine, by pressing the combine button.  And immediately the files will collapse into a single dialogue box.  Here you can freely re-arrange the page order by simply dragging  and dropping the pages to the desired location.

Step 4 Save.  Now click File->Save As… here the format properties dialogue box allows you to save the file into many other different formats including pdf, jpg, tiff, psd etc.  For the pdf format, there are many options.  You can simply use the default options, or choose as you desire.  Below lists some of the more frequently used ones:

General, optimized for.  I am not sure how the optimization works but it says you can optimize it for screen, ebook, printer or prepress.  The only difference I found is that optimizing for screen significantly reduces the file size and quality.  The other 3 options are indistinguishable for me.

Security.  This is rather useful if you want to password protect the pdf file.  There are also many options for the level of protection for this file to choose from. A friendly remember is that when you send the file in email do not send the password in the same email.  This email is too easy to be forwarded as is.

Watermark.  You can freely add a watermark and choose the text, font size etc.  This is rather useful too.
