Monograms not only signify ownership, they offer a streamlined way to decorate plain pillows. However, if you love boho décor, painted or embroidered monograms can look a bit stuffy. Instead, put a twist on traditional monograms by creating them out of buttons. Button monograms can be as plain or eclectic as you like, retain the elegance of your décor and don’t add any out-of-place details. Plus, you get to go through your collection of mismatched buttons and display your favorites.

1. Spread out your pillow sham on a flat, clean surface. Draw the letter of your choice on the center of the sham in chalk. Use a streamlined font for the most readable letters. You may freehand the letter or use a stencil.
2. Place your buttons on the pillow sham. Choose buttons of different sizes, colors and materials. All of the buttons must coordinate in some way. Novelty buttons shaped like animals or everyday objects get lost in this project.
3. Gently move your buttons to the side, recreating the letter on your work surface so you know where each button should go.
4. Pick the buttons up, one at a time, and stitch them onto the pillow sham by hand. Knot the thread inside the pillow shame and snip away any excess. Stitch each button into place this way.
