Unlike the days before the home computer home businesses can now compete with small commercial businesses and save on rent in the process. Faxes, high speed internet connections, dedicated home telephone lines, and cell phones help to make a home-based business a reality. Earlier home businesses had been where families lived on the second floor of their house while converting the first floor into a store, whereupon close of business they would secure the first floor and retire to the upper floors. This type of home business is still done in some rural areas.
It might surprise you just how many large companies actually started at home in there basement or kitchen table.
Apple Computer, started by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak from Steve’s garage.
Hewlett-Packard, in a garage. This location is now a museum.
Hurricane Electric. Based in California now the main ISP provider in the state.
Amazon.com, internet retailer founded by Jeff Bezos.

Some of the smaller work from home businesses include the following (but be careful some are just blatant scams)
Stuffing envelopes
Assembly of items of some type, such as crafts, jewellery or medical equipment. The worker is required to pay up front for materials and construction kits, and when they attempt to sell the finished products back to the scheme’s organiser, they are told that the products “don’t meet our specifications”, leaving the worker with assembled products and no buyer.
Data entry.
Processing medical claims. The worker pays several hundred dollars for medical billing software, but will later discover that most medical clinics process their own bills, outsource their billing to established firms rather than individuals, or have stricter requirements than the purchased software can provide.
Forum spamming. Usually advertised as some type of email processing, the worker is simply given instructions on spamming online forums, and told they can make money by selling these same instructions online.

Phone sex
Online surveys
Once again this list goes on and on: The bottom line is as always do your research and contact your local bureau of trading standards. Have fun working at home it is possible and you can make a reasonable income.

Your examples show much actual people are behind all major business success stories, not the investors or even the technology. People who did something they thought they could do and be good at.
I can hear people whining left and right that there are no longer such opportunities present for aspiring business owners to take advantage of, but as you correctly pointed out, there’s so much technology now available to us that, if anything, it’s become easier to start your own business and succeed at it.
Working from home is definitely the first step towards financial independence and even if you don’t go down that path in the end, your career will still benefit from what you learned on the way.
