(Free) Applications You Must Put on Your New Mac

There are some very useful applications that Macs should come with – But unfortunately they don’t. So here is the list to download whenever you buy a new Mac:

1.  SMC Fan Control is an application that allows you to see the temp of your Mac as well as adjust the fan speed.  It sits in the menu bar so you can see it whenever your using your Mac.  SMC Fan Control can be downloaded from MacUpdate here:  http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23049/smcfancontrol

2.  The Unarchiver is a very useful Mac OSX application that allows you to open many different types of compressed files.  This is great when you are frequently downloading old files that are stuffed into formats that are no longer supported by the de-compressor built into Mac OSX.  The Unarchiver can be downloaded freely from its website here:  http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html

3.  iStat Pro is an application that allows you to monitor a huge range of things from your Mac’s dashboard.  Such as how hot certain parts of your Mac are, how much HD space you’ve got left, how healthy your battery is and much more.  iStat Pro can be downloaded from the creator’s website here:  http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/

4.  Caffeine is an application that allows you to prevent your Mac from falling asleep.  It is toggled from the menu bar, meaning you can easily switch it on when doing things like downloads or watching long videos.  Then you can switch it off again so your Mac can sleep.  Caffeine can be downloaded freely here:  http://caffeine.en.softonic.com/mac

5.  Coconut battery is an application which gives you very detailed information about your Mac laptop’s battery (so only download this if you own a Macintosh laptop).  One very useful piece of information coconut battery gives you that no other application seems to is the physical age of your Mac laptop (in months).  In fact, that feature was the sole reason I downloaded coconut battery.  The application can be downloaded here:  http://www.coconut-flavour.com/

6.  CandyBar isn’t free (its shareware) but it had to be put in this list because it is a fantastic application.  CandyBar allows you to modify every icon on your Mac with icons downloaded from the internet.  CandyBar can be downloaded here:  http://www.panic.com/candybar/
