Apples next iPhone and iPad OS, with hype surrounding the Apple announcements, here is a balanced take on Apple iOS 6 announcements.

Apple is adding their own version of Maps and ditching Google Maps. Apple’s maps will be in 3D and bound to be a great app. What would be useful is offline caching, which would have handily given iOS 6 users access to maps when there was no cellular coverage when trying to find a way around a foreign city.

Apple have made Facetime available over 3G instead restricting it to Wi Fi only, they have effectively opened up what iPhone users can do, from saying hi to a friend, to reporting back to the office, these were all impossible with a Wi Fi only version of Facetime.

Facebook will be baked into iOS 6, along a similar way that twitter was integrated in iOS 5, integrating Facebook is a great way of adding hype but should Facebook not be around much longer the functionality could be come the equivalent of a dead duck.

New call reject features, in iOS 6 they will be able to reply with message and or remind me later, well Windows mobile 6 phone did this a number of years ago, whats taken Apple so long to get around to adding this.

Siri is a feature where you can talk to your phone to get results, iOS 6 gives Siri a more intelligent way to respond to queries about sports, dining, and films, Siri gains functionality across the entirety of IOS with better language support and allows Apple an already massive lead in voice navigation.

Many of these upgrades have already been available on many other platforms such as Blackberry or Android while many others have borrowed from third party application that have long been available from iPhone hardware.
