Android App Review – World Countries

I came across World Countries when I was searching for a quick geography flash card app that I could use to show my daughter where a few places in the world are – admittedly, this was before Google Earth made it onto my phone.

You’ll be surprised to hear that even with Google Earth on my phone, I still have World Countries installed. Why? Because it’s lightweight, quick to access, concise, and jam-packed full of information. For example, did you know that the capital of Burkina Faso is Ouagadougou and that the country has a land area of 273,800 sq km? No? Neither did I. As well as titbits like that, you can also find out information about:

·         Languages

·         Population

·         GDP

·         Currency

·         Government

·         Coordinates

·         Historical summary

That’s what makes this a great app for those of you who have kids with geography homework. Google Earth is OK, but there’s often a lot of messing about with the overly complex interface. Sometimes, less is more, and in the case of World Countries this is definitely the case.

A great feature is the ‘Reference Map’ button, which shows the country in question surrounded by its neighbouring countries – or in some cases seas.

Admittedly, this app needs some work. The interface isn’t the greatest – where Google Earth can be too complex, World countries is a little too basic. But basics aside, this is a pocketful of information that is very informative and extraordinarily useful.
