Privacy is the ability of one or a group of individuals to maintain life and personal affairs of the public, or to control the flow of information about themselves. Privacy is sometimes related to anonymity although anonymity is more appreciated, especially by people who are publicly known. Privacy can be regarded as an aspect of security.
Right of privacy violations by governments, corporations, or individuals to be part of the law in many countries, and sometimes, the constitution or laws of privacy. Almost all states have laws that, in many ways, to limit privacy, for example, tax laws generally require the provision of information on income. In some countries individual privacy may conflict with the rules of free speech, and some laws require that public exposure of information that can be considered private in other countries or cultures.
Privacy may be voluntarily sacrificed, generally for a specific benefit, with only a minimum of risk and benefit can be accompanied by a specific hazard or even losses. An example is the sacrifice of privacy to follow a lottery or competition; someone giving their personal details (often for advertising purposes) to get a chance to win a prize. Another example is if the information voluntarily provided is stolen or misused such as identity theft.
