So you’ve managed to lose the Administrator password, what do you do? Here are the best ways:
There are a few ways which you can use to recover or reset your password if you lost it:
1-Try to remember the password you put. Take a small rest or drink coffee is you must. If you really are trying to remember something, you won’t unless it’s on the tip of you’re tounge. Sleep on it, and you will remember.
2- If there is another account with administrator capabilities, without a password, then use that to reset the password of the other account.
3-There is a file called “LOGON.SCR” that you can play with in some way to pop up a Command Prompt screen with FULL capabilities. Look it up on google, as it is too long to explain here.
4-There are programs made for cracking these passwords, eventually retrieving, resetting or cancelling it. These programs are burned onto CD and set to autorun to boot on login page. Here are some of these programs:
Ophcrack
John the Ripper
Rainbow crack
L0phtcrack version 5 (now called LC5)
And many more. Now these programs all use a brute force attack along with dictionary and rainbow attacks cracking 32-64 bit password.
5-Try to login to the account which first came with XP. That account has no password yet with all admin capabilities. Change the password from there.
6-Log in without a password using DreampackPL. It is a program you can download online, allowing you to bypass the login prompt by Microsoft. Look it up on google for a better explanation.
7-Contact Microsoft as they have a free service for recovering passwords that is available for Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003, and Vista. You will have to wait anywhere between 1 – 48 hours to recieve a response from them with your password in it.
Very important: If you do manage to log on to the administrator account after ‘hacking’ it, then all the EFS encrypted files will render inaccessable until you login with the real password.
