A simple guide on how to create network connection between computers.
Network connection is used to connect one computer with another. There are various type of network connection such as LAN (local Area Network), and also WAN (Wide Area Network). Need to transfer large file(1 GB and above) but out of thumb Drive space? Test your multiplayer gaming skills (Counter-Strike, Battlefield, World Of Warcraft) with your friends ? Looks like you need a computer network. But what i’m talking about right now is how to create a connection with only two computer. I’m going to show you simple step on how to create the connection.
First, you need 2 computers ( of course) and both computer must have:
- Network Interface Card (NIC) -PCI or integrated with your motherboard
- CAT5 cable
- Operating System- Microsoft Windows XP, Vista
Step-by-step instruction:
- Connect the RJ 45 cable (CAT 5 cable) to both NIC of both computer (at the back of the computer, near the USB interface)
- Go to Start-> Control Panel ->Network Connection
- A window will appear and click on Local Area Connection icon once
- Right click and then go to properties
- A new window will appear and highlight the TCP/IP from the list
- Click properties and a new window will appear
- Click on “use the following IP address”
- Type 192.168.0.1 on one computer ( as a reference) and 192.168.0.2 to the second computer.
- Click on the subnet mask and it will automatically fill in the space
- Both computer must click on “ use the following DNS server addresses” and enter 192.168.0.1.
- Click ok and exit
- Go to control panel again and click on network setup wizard
- Click next (ignore the wireless network if you have one) and choose the second option from the list (3 of them)
- Fill the necessary field
- Field the work group. Note that both computer must enter the same work group (e.g MSHOME).
- Turn on “file and printer sharing”
- Click next and select “just finish the wizard” and finish
- Reboot if you’ve been prompt to
- Go to My Network Places and select work group. Both computer icon and names should appear.
Now that you have finish creating a network connection , you can enjoy benefits of networking such as:
- Transfer large file easily
- Multiplayer Gaming (Counter-Strike, World Of Warcraft, Battlefield 2 etc)
Note that on Windows Vista, you should configure TCP/IPv4.
If you’re using a switch (multiple networking) just set the IP address with one as a reference (192.168.0.1).
